What to Do With the Mulch Left Behind After Stump Grinding
When we grind a stump, what's left over is essentially a pile of fresh wood mulch mixed with soil. Depending on the size of the stump, that pile can be small or surprisingly large. The good news is, you've got options.
Option 1: Leave it on the grind site (Grind & Go). This is our standard service and the most affordable option. The mulch sits on or around the grind site and breaks down over time. Many property owners just rake it out flat and let nature do its thing. It's a solid choice if the stump was in a back corner of the property or somewhere out of sight.
Option 2: Move it to a useful spot (Grind & Relocate). Stump grindings make decent mulch for areas where you don't need anything fancy. We've seen homeowners use it to fill low spots in the yard, mulch around trees in a back lot, build up a berm, or stockpile it behind a shed for later use. With our Grind & Relocate service, we move the mulch to wherever you want it on your property.
Option 3: Get rid of it entirely (Grind & Haul). Some folks just want it gone. If you're prepping the area for sod, a patio, a garden bed, or new landscaping, the last thing you want is a pile of wood chips in the way. Our Grind & Haul service removes everything from your property so you're starting with a clean slate.
A few things to know about stump grindings as mulch:
They're not the same as bagged hardwood mulch from the garden center. Stump grindings break down faster, can tie up nitrogen in soil as they decompose, and aren't ideal for vegetable gardens or flower beds where you want stable, long lasting mulch. They work best as ground cover in low priority areas, fill material, or in compost piles.
